FOREWORD

In order to assess the extent of autoexhaust lead pollution and study its impact on roadside vegetation in Delhi city, Central Pollution Control Board initiated systematic studies in January, 1984. The study mainly covered (i) assessment of traffic volume (ii) ambient air quality monitoring and (iii) impact assessment of plant species exposed at selected traffic intersections in the city.

A report on the studies carried out during January, 1984 to June 1985 has been already published and the present report covers the study period from August, 1985 to April, 1987 along with final recommendations. It is expected that the data and information provided in the Part I and Part II of the report shall help in roadside ecosystem management and to reassure ourselves with regard to lead concentration in the wake of change in the Octane number.

The entire planning, coordination and implementation of the project was done by the Scientists of the Central Board (See appendix II). Their dedicated efforts are appreciated.
